About The Artist
Zita Abreu is a Contemporary British artist making bronze sculptures. Her sculptures can be found in galleries and private collections around the world. She lives for part of the year in south of Spain, which has provided her with the oportunity to spend time in the Doñana national park. Here she is able to observe and photograph wildlife.
Zita has always been interested in art although she actually has more of a scientific background. Having studied a biomedical science degree and worked as a biology teacher. The biomedical science degree gave Zita the oportunity to study anatomy and physiology which has helped her a lot with sculpting, enabling her to focus on movement and on making anatomically correct sculptures although she also has some more abstract sculptures.
While at university she also attended sculpture classes during the evenings which she enjoyed so much that she concidered giving up her degree to persue an art foundation course for which she had been offered a place. However she decided to continue with the Biomedical Science degree.
Zita continued sculpting whenever she was able, making bronze sculptures alongside other jobs until finally being able to dedicate all of her time to sculpture.
” The first sculpture I ever sold, acording to the gallery was bought from them with a number or other sculptures and paintings to decorate the Royal Court in Saudi Arabia”
Zita has worked with several professional foundries to produce her sculptures. First she makes her sculptures in clay and then she prepares molds to take to the foundary to be cast into bronze.
” I work closely with the foundary checking and retouching the waxes to make sure I am completely happy with them before they are cast into bronze.”
They are cast using the lost wax process which has remained little changed since the time of the Ancient Greeks.
The sculptures are limited editions of twelve, Zita´s love of travel provides her with plenty of inspiration for sculptures.
Zita is currently working on a collection of sculptures inspired by her travels in South America.
” My grandfather was Venezuelan and I have always been interested in exploring nature and culture in South American countries. “
Zita has also spent time in traveling in South East Asia, where she has taken many fotos from which she draws inspiration for future projects.
